Three Great Train Journeys For the Pioneering Adventurer in You

Nowadays, when we think of traveling, we don’t really think about how we’re getting there – we just want to get to our choice destination as quickly within our budget as possible so that we can spend as much time in that location as possible.  But what if your vacation took the travel time as part of the trip itself?  Many of us travelers have lost sight (quite literally) of the fact that part of what makes traveling so beautiful are the sights and scenery that you see on you way to you best destination. While it can be hard to appreciate the scenery from a plane 30,000km above ground, traveling by train can certainly allow anyone to gain a renewed appreciation of the world around them.

There are a load of fabulous train treks around the globe, such as the Palace on Wheels in India and the Pride of Africa train that journeys through several of the most notable African cities.  But as we have to narrow our choices down to our top three, here are our favourite train journeys from around the world:

1. The Royal Scotsman

The drawback:  the price.  But if you want to go on an epic train journey, then you’ve got to climb aboard the Royal Scotsman.  This multi-day train trip (most trips vary between 2 days o 5 days depending on what you choose) winds through the Scottish Highlands and can traverse throughout most of Great Britain if you opt for the 7-day long train ride.  If you travel in the summertime, you’ll be treated to an amazing 20 hours of daylight around the summer solstice in June while will allow you watch majestic osprey’s soar over the crystal clear lochs of Scotland.  Choose to ride in the fall, and you’ll be able to enjoy all of the colourful splendours that fall brings to this beautiful country.

Not only will you be able to enjoy some of the most lovely sights ever to be seen on this planet, but once you hop aboard this train you’ll be treated as if you’re a part of the British monarchy.  Fine cuisine, fantastic wines and luxurious cabins make the higher-than0usual price tag for this trip all the worthwhile.

2. The Rocky Mountaineer

Let’s move across the pond and head to the west coast of Canada where travelers can treat themselves on a train ride varying anywhere from 2 to 8 mights between Vancouver to Alberta.  Depending on what you want to see and where you want to go, you can choose for your trip to begin in beautiful British Columbia, Canada or you can move a bit more inland and travel from Banff, Jasper or Calgary, Alberta.

The Rocky Mountaineer is significantly more affordable than the Royal Scotsman and offers some of the most splendid views that you’ll never be able to take in.  From staggering snowy mountain tops to icy blue waters to lush greenery, the views that you’ll experience on this journey will go unrivaled by any other. IF you’re traveling from Britain or Ireland, you can organize it through the handy and suitably named My Canada Trips, as they have a dedicated Rocky Mountaineer package.

3. The Eastern and Oriental Express

If a modern and stylish train trip is what you seek, then jump aboard the Orient Express.  Typically beginning in Singapore and stretching right through to Bangkok, you can choose a trip that ranges anywhere from 2 to 8 days in duration and that can take you through Different areas of Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.  You’ll be treated to views of golden temples, paddy fields, and ultra-modern cosmopolitan cities from these luxurious train cabins.
